Current version: 0.9alpha
Yes, you can play Homeworld on your Macintosh! (Mac OS X required.) This was made possible when the developers, Relic, released the source code for the game. The Macintosh port is in active development by a number of volunteers in collaboration with a similar group working to create a version that works on Linux: Homeworld SDL. The Macintosh version is currently incomplete, missing some major components such as sound and pre-rendered movie playback. However the game itself is otherwise quite playable.
Please note that the original game disc is still required to play the game. Unfortunately, you currently need access to a PC to do the initial installation (sorry). We hope that at some point a native Macintosh installer might be possible but at the moment you have to:
- Buy a PC copy of Homeworld (see our edition guide).
Do NOT buy Homeworld Cataclysm or Homeworld 2 as they will not work for this.
- Install the game on a PC
- Download and install the latest PC patch (1.05) (not required if you have the Sold Out edition).
- Copy the game from the PC (C:\Program Files\SIERRA\Homeworld) to your Macintosh. For example, via a network connection or CDR.
- Download the Macintosh Homeworld application to your Macintosh
- Uncompress the Macintosh application and copy it to the Homeworld folder you created in step 4
- Double-click on the Homeworld application you copied in step 6 to play!
